At this year’s African SEZs Annual Meeting, UNIDO and the Africa Economic Zones Organization (AEZO) launched their joint Report “Characteristics, Trends, and Way Forward for Special Economic Zones in Africa – Insights from a UNIDO-AEZO Survey”. This comprehensive report, based on a survey among 63 SEZs in 26 countries and funded by the EU & the OACPS, delves into the current state and potential of African SEZs, offering key insights that can shape the future of these zones.
The report identifies several areas where SEZs can enhance their performance, including the need to strengthen management structures to improve efficiency and attract more investment. It also highlights the growing importance of digitalization, noting that SEZs that embrace technology can boost operational efficiency and competitiveness.
Moreover, the report stresses the value of diversifying into high-growth sectors, which could help SEZs, reduce reliance on traditional industries and unlock new economic opportunities.Ultimately, the report points to three strategic pathways forward: improving governance, harnessing digital tools, and expanding into new sectors. These recommendations aim to help African SEZs enhance their economic impact, create more jobs, and attract greater foreign direct investment.
Mr Junior Lodge, Assistant Secretary-General of the OACPS Secretariat, delivered opening remarks at the launch session of the report.
